IMPORTANT ADVISORY: Please take note of the following with regards to touring in the Himalayas on a motorcycle, before booking yourself on the tours:

RIDING CONDITIONS
Majority of the route involves riding on un-paved/dirt track/loose gravel type surfaces.  Wherever paved/bitumen roads exist, they are mostly bumpy & strewn with pot-holes.  In other words, riding conditions are more “off road”.  There are significant number of water/creek crossings (small to medium streams flowing over the road).  The surface below most of these streams consists mainly of rocks.  Some can be a bit more challenging due to deeper water in which case we place our crew in the middle to help/push the riders through in case they get stuck between rocks.  Mud/ wet mud conditions are common and made worse in certain sections where road gets washed-out or widening work is under-progress.  Riders need to have confidence in their riding skills/experience to be able to handle their bikes under such conditions.

HEALTH & FITNESS

As a standard procedure, applicants of Himalayan Tours stand advised against participation if they suffer from severe asthma, cardio-vascular disorders , muscular disorders, respiratory disorders, any such medical precondition which might be detrimental to the health of the participant on such a tour.   Our tours involve spending several consecutive nights at high altitudes (from 3500 to 4500 meters).  Hence, we suggest applicants with any such precondition to consult their doctor if it would be OK for them to undertake such an adventure before booking themselves on the tour.  We carry bottled oxygen & pulse oximeter (to check blood oxygen levels) as a precaution but we are not accompanied by a Doctor (only support staff certified in First-Aid).

SAFETY

Safety is top priority on these tours.  The tours are run in a convoy formation with tour leader in the front and chase-vehicles at the end.  Since most of the region lacks any mobile phone networks there is no communication between the front of the group & the rear.  Any rider with the ambition of achieving some personal milestones or desiring to ride independent of the group is discouraged from joining the tours.

The Himalayas - the very name conjures up images of imposing, snow capped peaks, raging rivers, tranquil lakes, beautiful valleys with dense forests, far-flung villages sprinkled along ever winding roads, uncharted terrains and the resilient people of this mystical & majestic region.

The Spiti & Ladakh regions have a lot in common and both share a similar physical & cultural character. In fact it is just a political boundary which separates the two regions. Both also enjoy the reputation of being one of the last remaining places in India (accessible by road) offering pristine mountain terrain besides retaining its idyllic charm and serenity. (Both are also called “Little Tibet” because of their resemblance to the terrain, climate & culture of Tibet)

Until recently, the regions of Spiti & Ladakh were beyond limits for foreign tourists - but now with the grant of “inner-line permits” they’re slowly opening up and whispers about the wonders of its awe-inspiring grandeur are also starting to gain volume.  Some of the most treacherous roads meander their way through these intimidating mountains going over some very high passes ranging from 4500 to 5300 m above sea level (“claimed” to be the highest motor-able in the world - though its disputable, they’re amongst the highest, nonetheless) and crossing some very furious rivers over bridges constructed at some of the most unimaginable places by the unshakable Border Road Organization and the Indian Army. Since the roads are single-lane and intermittently paved it’s a roller-coaster ride of high-altitude passes, wash-outs, creek-crossings, landslides, glacial melts and broken bridges. Travelling through this region by road requires love for adventure and a certain amount of tenacity against the odds.

Our tours take you to the most stunning locations in the region some of them located above 4500 m above sea level and over some very high passes (“Khardung La” 5580 m, “Chang La” 5183 m, “Taglang la” 5359 m, “Baralacha La” 4870 m,  “Kunzum La” 4550 m).  Also, our tours are not rushed.  Check out the itineraries and you’ll see that a 21 day tour has roughly 7  “non-riding days” giving you sufficient time for rest, sight-seeing or exploration.

14 N / 15 D - The Spiti Circuit.
